Fall is when Bloomfield, West Orange, and Montclair really come alive, and October 2026 is packed with festivals, street fairs, and community events that show off what makes each town feel like home. Whether you already live here, are relocating from NYC, or are just exploring Essex County, this is your honest calendar of the can't-miss events across the three towns this fall.

One of the best questions I get from relocating buyers is "what is it actually like to live here?" and my favorite answer is to hand them the community calendar. These are the weekends where you feel the character of a town, meet your neighbors, and start to picture your own life in it. Let me walk you through what is coming up.

Bloomfield: Harvest Fest and Porchfest open the season

Bloomfield kicks off its fall calendar with the Bloomfield Harvest Fest on Saturday, October 10, from noon to 6 PM at Washington Street and Glenwood Avenue in Bloomfield Center. Expect family-friendly fun, local vendors, food trucks, and live entertainment right in the heart of downtown. It is the kind of event that makes Bloomfield's walkable center feel like a small town with a lot going on.

A week earlier, on Sunday, October 4, Halcyon Park Porchfest brings live music to porches and front yards around Halcyon Park, one of Bloomfield's most charming historic neighborhoods. Porchfest is free, casual, and wonderfully community driven: neighbors host, neighbors play, and everyone wanders from house to house. If you want to see how tight-knit Bloomfield can be, this is the weekend.

Montclair: Pizzafest, Fall Fest, and the Film Festival

Montclair's October is genuinely busy, and it is a big reason people fall for the town. The month opens with NJ Pizzafest at Lackawanna Plaza on Saturday, October 3, a celebration of pizza from some of the region's best makers. It is family friendly, delicious, and a very Montclair way to spend a fall Saturday.

On Sunday, October 4, the Montclair History Center and Montclair Community Farms host their fourth annual Fall Fest fundraiser, alongside a Rosedale Cemetery Old Section walking tour. Both give you a glimpse of Montclair's history and its community-minded spirit. Around the same time, Van Vleck House & Gardens runs its fall programming, including Tales on the Trails on October 10 and Acorns & Oaks on October 14, gentle family outings in one of the town's loveliest public gardens.

West Orange: the big Street Fair and a zoo favorite

West Orange's signature fall event is the West Orange Street Fair, an all-day celebration with a beer and wine garden, live music, more than 150 crafters and vendors, and food trucks. It also includes free entry to the Thomas Edison Museum, a nice nod to the town's inventive history and a great excuse to explore downtown West Orange with the whole family.

For animal lovers, Essex County Turtle Back Zoo hosts the Penguin Waddle on Sunday, October 18, a family favorite that closes out the season at one of Essex County's most popular attractions. Between the street fair and the zoo, West Orange gives you plenty of reasons to spend a fall weekend outdoors.

Make a full weekend of it: foliage, farms, and fall color

October is also peak season for the outdoors around all three towns. The same weekends as the festivals, the leaves along South Mountain, Eagle Rock, and Mills Reservations are turning, and the local orchards are at their busiest.
