West Orange has temporarily modified all of its free jitney shuttle schedules effective Monday, October 12, 2026 through Friday, November 13, 2026, so the buses still connect riders to the Orange, South Orange, and Brick Church train stations while NJ Transit runs a five-week rail schedule change for the Portal North Bridge final cutover. The change means weekday morning and evening departure times differ from the normal schedule during that window, though the service stays free and runs its usual weekday hours. For anyone in West Orange who rides the jitney, or who relies on a car-free commute, this is the local piece of a region-wide commuter story worth knowing before your next trip to the station.

Why the schedules changed

The Portal North Bridge project entered its final phase starting October 9, when crews began transferring the last track off the 116-year-old Portal Bridge and onto the new bridge over the Hackensack River. Through the cutover, trains run on a single track between Newark and Secaucus, and weekday Midtown Direct service on the Morris & Essex, Gladstone, and Montclair-Boonton lines is diverted to Hoboken Terminal instead of New York Penn Station. Those are the lines serving the stations West Orange residents use, including Orange, South Orange, and Brick Church.

Because NJ Transit's modified schedules took effect Sunday, October 11, with regular service expected to resume Sunday, November 15, West Orange retimed its jitney runs so the free shuttle would still line up with the reduced and shifted train departures. The township posted route-by-route schedules for the temporary window.

What changes for riders

The practical change is that weekday jitney departure times differ from normal during the cutover, so riders should follow the temporary schedules the township posted rather than the usual timetable. Service otherwise continues as before: free, Monday through Friday, roughly 6 to 9 AM and 5 to 8:30 PM, serving the Orange, South Orange, and Brick Church stations. Riders can also track the buses through the Passio Go app.

Two smaller details are worth noting. Monday, October 12 was a municipal holiday with township offices closed, but the jitney ran its regular schedule that day. And riders with questions can reach West Orange's Transportation Division at 973-325-4134 or jitney@westorange.org.

What it means for renters and buyers

The free jitney is a real asset for West Orange households, especially renters and anyone who does not drive every day. A town that retimes its local shuttle to keep rail connections working during a regional disruption is doing the practical, resident-first thing, and that kind of responsiveness is part of how a town feels to live in.

For buyers weighing the commute, the bigger picture is unchanged: the math that makes West Orange attractive, the door-to-door time and the walkable station access, is the same after November 15. This five-week window is temporary, and when it ends, the region's biggest rail chokepoint is permanently replaced. In the meantime, the jitney retiming is the detail that keeps the shuttle useful for people who count on it.

The bottom line

If you ride the West Orange jitney, check the temporary schedules for your route between now and November 13; the buses still run free on their usual weekday hours, just at adjusted times that match the cutover rail schedule. The service is being retimed specifically so residents can keep reaching the train. If you are thinking about buying or selling in West Orange and want to talk through what the commute picture means for home values, I am happy to walk through it with you. No pressure, just honest local guidance.
